Developing A Safety Plan

Having a conversation with the Naomi Society can help identify things you can do to increase your own safety and the safety of your children. Staff at a transition house can help you with a safety plan, even if you are not staying there. You can’t control your partner’s behaviour and you are not responsible for the violence.

Here are some suggestions that help you stay safer. You don’t have to do everything at once. Try one thing at a time and start with the one that is easiest and safest for you.

  • How do I exit safely/quickly if I decide to leave? Should I practice?

  • What can I do in the place I am living it make it safer? (Change locks, ensure doors/windows are locked, security cameras, rope/ladder, outside lighting, etc).

  • If I feel we are going to have an argument, where in the house can I go that is the lowest risk for me? (Try to avoid bathroom, kitchen, garage – anywhere there may be weapons and no outside door access).

  • Are there weapons in my home?  Should I think about having them removed?

  • Where can I put copies of important documents and money? (ID, birth certificates, etc).

  • Should I have an emergency bag packed for me and my children?

  • Should I keep my phone and keys on my person or in an easy to access area?

  • What friend/neighbour should I tell about my situation?  Discuss calling for help?

  • What ‘code’ word should I use with my children, family, or friends so that they know I am in danger and they need to call the police?

  • Should I be aware of the vehicle does my ex-partner/partner drives/has access to?

  • Should I check the inside/outside of my vehicle?

  • Should I always have a full tank of gas?

  • Should I always back in the driveway to allow for a quick exit?

  • Should I teach my children to call 911?

  • Should I contact the school/daycare to make them aware of who can pick up my children?

  • Should I tell my boss about the situation?

  • Should I have a co-worker walk me to my car at the end of my shift?

  • How should I change my routine when I am out in public? (When I typically go grocery shopping, bank, etc).

  • Should I check my smart phone to ensure that my location services are off?

  • Should I be mindful of what I am sharing on social media and where I am checking in?

  • What Apps or Devices am I using now? (social media, activity trackers, banking)

  • Should I be aware of shared and linked accounts? (phone bill)

  • Should I know how to apply for an EPO, Peace Bond, or to Family Court?

  • If I have to leave my home, where will I go that is safe?

  • What are the local transition house phone numbers?
